Welcome to L.E.A.R.N.!

2010 Special Olympics Summer Games

Each member of the Track and Field team had their best times for each of their events, when you are in the competition your heart starts racing and you are ready to go!

The Track and Field team took home a lot of medals from the summer games at Vanderbilt University on May 22nd.  Our relay team took the field first and this consisted of Terrell Brown, Joseph Harrison, Daniel Harrison and Casey Martin, they took home the silver with their best time ever at 1:22.

Terrell took home the gold in his age group in the 50 and the 100 Meter.  He outran all of his competitors, he just left them standing in the dust.  He had a great day.

Joseph won a gold in the 50 meter in his age group and took home the bronze in the softball throw.  He had his best throw of 27 feet, that is a record for Joseph.

Daniel took home the gold in the 100 meter in his age group and also a gold in the softball throw.  He also had his best throw at 51 feet.  He really worked hard on doing his best that day.

Casey Martin had his best times by running a 13.59 in the 100 Meter in his age group and took a gold home.  He also took gold in the 200 Meter at a time of 28 seconds.  He shaved off 2 seconds of his time at the race that day.

All the boys did great and had a really good time.  They cannot wait until next year where they want to win the gold in the relay.  They practiced hard for the last two months and their work paid off.  The athletes were very coachable which made my job easy.  I had a great time teaching them about track and field and I loved to see their winning smiles on the podium.

2009

The L.E.A.R.N. Track and Field Program had a great summer of practicing the skills of running and field events.  Each participant decided which two events they would like to participate in for next years Summer Games in Nashville.

Cory felt his best efforts would be running the 50 yard dash and the softball throw, he did very well at both of these.  Casey knew running would work best for him so he is practicing in the 100 yard dash as well as the 220 (which is one time around the track).  Terrell knew the running events would be good for him too so he decided on the 50 and 100 yard dash and he is very good at both of them.  Terrell is a very fast runner, Casey and him like to compete against each other in the 100 yard dash.  They both have great times so it is a lot of fun watching them and seeing who wins.

Even though we did not get to participate in the Track and Field at the Special Olympics State Level this year, we will be ready for next year.  Actually, at the L.E.A.R.N. Summer Games Celebration held at Sports*Com, we got to show off our skills to all of the other L.E.A.R.N. participants and I think we have a few who are really interested in our program.  Some of the kids just didn't know what Track and Field consisted of so they got a chance to see and participate and really enjoyed the events.
